Lauren J. (Penley) Haskins passed to eternal rest on Feb. 7, 2013, in Lawton, Okla.. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her beautiful smile and infectious laugh.
Lauren was born on July 10, 1982. in Westerly, R.I. She grew up in Stonington, Conn., where she attended school and was active in gymnastics and dance. She volunteered with the Stonington Ambulance Association as an EMT. She graduated from Stonington High School in 2000.
In September 2000, she joined the Army and served for 11 years. She received an honorable discharge at the rank of Sergeant First Class. She had multiple deployments as a combat medic. In 2002, she served with the NATO peacekeeping force in Kosovo. In 2006, she served with the 10th Mountain Division at the Korengal Outpost in Konar Province. In 2009, with the 10th Mountain Division, she helped establish an emergency services outpost in Logar Province. She served valiantly beside the infantry on the frontline and received five Army Commendation Medals for her efforts.
After the Army, she attended Post University, working toward a degree in accounting.
She was married to Ryan Haskins on Nov. 11, 2010, in Las Vegas, and they moved to Lawton in 2012.
She is survived by her husband and her parents, Scott and Imelda Penley, of Stonington; two daughters: Abigail Pearson and Emma Haskins; her brothers, Jonathan Penley and Jordan Penley, both of Stonington; and her grandparents, Isauro and Nora Fermo of Mystic, Conn., and Paul and Marjorie Penley of Griswold, Conn.
A benefit dinner will be held at the Mystic VFW on Saturday, April 6 from 4 to 8 p.m. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date, to be announced at the dinner.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to benefit Lauren's surviving daughters may be made to The Abby & Emma Trustee Fund, c/o Scott Penley, at 860-961-3473.
