Louis R. Zanella, 87, of Elisa Avenue, Westerly, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday evening, September 1, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elisa "Josie" J. (Lotens) Zanella of Westerly, whom he married on February 12, 1947 in Westerly. He is also survived by his daughter, Johanna Christina, wife of James, of Pawcatuck, his daughter, Rhonda Cherenzia of Westerly, his son, Ronald Zanella, husband of Denise of Charlestown, his grandchildren, Elisa Raymond, Shanna Hinchcliffe, Sergio Cherenzia, Damon Cherenzia, Vanessa Cherenzia, Taurean Zanella, Dillon Zanella, five great-granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brothers, Joseph and Charles Zanella and three sisters, Romeda Wills, Louise Terranova and Joan Ahern and son-in-law, Raymond F. Cherenzia.

Mr. Zanella was born in Westerly on October 29, 1925, the son of the late Charles J. and Anita (Faes) Zanella. He proudly served in the United States Army in World War II, serving in France, Belgium – where he met the love of his life, Josie, and Germany as a Tank specialist with the 707th Tank Battalion attaining the rank of Sergeant. In 1956, he became the founder of Zanella Plumbing & Heating of Westerly to which his family still operates in its third generation. He was a communicant of St. Pius X Church, the Westerly Lodge of Elks #678, the Amancio-Falcone-Gaccione Westerly Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 678 and the Calabrese Society. Louis enjoyed bowling, golfing, billiards and dancing. Louis was a hard worker who always had a good joke, Wow!!!
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 11:00 am at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm Street, Westerly. There will be no procession from the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will take place at St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly.
