Michael V. (Mickey) Levcowich, 89, passed away at The Westerly Hospital, surrounded by his family, on Sunday morning, June 23, 2013, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Westerly, the son of the late Vincent P. and Elizabeth Levcowich. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Toscano Levcowich, retired Town Clerk of Westerly.
Mickey graduated from Westerly High School in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II from 1943-1945. He was a member of Battery C, 110th Anti-aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion (MBC). He deployed to England aboard the Queen Mary and landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy, for the D-Day invasion.
During his service, he participated in five major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge, The Bridge of Remagen and the Liberation of Paris. Upon returning from the Army, he attended Mitchell College and graduated in 1950 with an associate's degree in general studies. He also attended Michigan State University. Later, he attended and graduated from the University of Rhode Island, class of 1953 with a bachelor's degree in horticulture. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
After graduating, Mike founded Pleasant Acres Nursery in 1954. He later expanded the business to include his children, a full service florist, garden center and greenhouses.
Mike was a licensed arborist and was the Westerly tree warden for many years until the present. He was a member of The R.I. Nurseryman's Association, The American Nurseryman's Association, The Westerly Yacht Club, the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary, the VFW, and an honorary member of the Calabrese Club. He was a communicant of St. Pius Church.
Mickey enjoyed classical music and playing the piano. He had a passionate love for nature and wildlife. He and his wife traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Far East, Africa and Australia. He returned to Normandy twice, and participated in the 50th Anniversary of the Invasion.
Mickey will be greatly missed by his four children, Lisa Daly, of Newport; Mitchel and his wife, Kelly Levcowich; Palmalee and her husband, David Trebisacci; and Kurt Levcowich, all of Westerly. Missing him also is his sister, Alice Levcowich; and five grandchildren, Katie, Jill and Erika Levcowich; and Tatiana and Christian Trebisacci; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Tatiana Levcowich, and brother, Peter Levcowich.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm St., Westerly. Burial with full military honors will follow at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly.
