Robert J. Chiaradio, beloved husband of Diane L. Chiaradio, of Stonington, passed away at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.
Robert was a distinguished member of the Westerly Police Department from the beginning of his career in 1962 until his retirement as Captain in 1987. He also served as a Constable for the State of R.I., until last year. Bob graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice from Salve Regina College and was an outstanding athlete in three sports during his Westerly High School career.
Bob was born to the late Anthony and Santa Chiaradio. He was a devoted father to his children, Robert Jr., Diane Chiaradio Bowdy, and John of Westerly and Lisa Switz and her husband Thomas, and Mark Comolli and his wife, Alison, of Stonington. Bob was the loving grandfather of Hannah, Jonathan, Todd, and Andrea Chiaradio, Randal and Jenna Bowdy, and Mackenzie, Alexi, and Jackson Switz. He was predeceased by his brothers, Dominic "Tom" and his wife Molly, Joseph and his wife Jean, and Anthony "Junie". Bob is also survived by his sister-in-law Jean; his former wife, Gail; many nieces and nephews, and many cherished lifelong friends.
Bob was a life member of the Calabrese Society and the Westerly Yacht Club as well as a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Westerly Elks Club. He also served his community as a coach for both Westerly Little League and Westerly Pee Wee Football and was a past President of the Westerly Recreation Board.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, from 4-8 p.m., in Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm St., Westerly, on Saturday at 10 a.m. There is no procession to the church from the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Sebastian's Cemetery, Westerly.
