William Francis "Bill" Harrington, 95, of High St., Westerly, passed away at The Westerly Hospital on Thursday, March 6, 2014. He was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice (Chiaradio) Harrington.
He leaves two daughters Kathryn Londé of Griswold, CT and Maureen Fortier and husband Dennis of Wyoming, R.I.; three sisters, Ruth Crafford and husband Bill of Rochester, NH, Ethel Lee and husband Ken of Lakewood, CA and Dorothy Salt of Hacienda Heights, CA. William will also be dearly missed by four grandchildren, Edward Rainville, Heather Ballestrini, Jennifer Richards and Jacob Londé; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a baby son, William; son-in-law, Stephen Londé; siblings, Thomas Harrington, Marion Pesula and Virginia Snyder.
Bill attended the CCC Camp in Charlestown, R.I., until he met and fell in love with his wife. He was then drafted into the Army and stationed in Newfoundland where he served during WWII. He worked as a mechanic in many garages until he retired from Electric Boat in Groton where Bill was known as "G.O.B." (Good Ole Bill) because as a working leader he taught many young men the craft of outside machinist – the right way. He built stock cars and restored antique autos and remained an active member of the Model-T Ford Club of RI. William also belonged to the Westerly Pawcatuck Antique Car Club and the Rolling Rhodies Model-A Car Club.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4-7 p.m., in Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m., in Immaculate Conception Church, 111 High St., Westerly. There is no procession from the funeral home to the church. Burial will follow at St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Home & Hospice of RI or St. Jude Children's Hospital, in Bill's memory.
