Agnes Santoro passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Aug. 4, 2012, after losing her battle to cancer. Agnes was born in Chicago, Ill., on Jan. 29, 1935, the daughter of the late Walter and Josephine (Brezina) Butren.
She moved to Westerly, R.I., around 1957, after marrying the late Michael A. Santoro (1927-1968). There she raised her five children and worked several jobs, concluding as a local bookkeeper for many years. Agnes was a devoted mother to her son and four daughters her whole life. You couldn't walk into her home without seeing multiple pictures of her children and their families. Her family will fondly remember her as an avid reader, crocheting many blankets and caring for stray animals.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Patti-Jo Gilchrist, her sister, Rose Poremba, and brother, George Butren. She has joined them all in heaven.
Her children will always remember her as a hard worker, devoted to her family and a woman of strong determination. She came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior and found peace in the Bible verse Revelation 3:5. She was a resident of Westerly until she retired to Groton and lived in Grasso Gardens.
Agnes is survived by her son, Michael Santoro and his wife Jeanette, of Quaker Hill; daughters, Kathy Marks and her husband, Robert, of Hope Valley R.I.; Lori Johnson and her husband, Skip, of Groton; and Susan Meyer and her husband Phillip, of Providence, R.I. Agnes also leaves her adored seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Agnes was a beautiful woman inside and out and was loved by her friends and family. Although she will be greatly missed, we know she is in a better place where she finds relief from pain and much peace. The family will hold a private burial. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Agnes' memory may be made to the North Stonington Bible Church Building Fund of 100D Jeremy Hill Road, North Stonington, Conn., 06359.
