Frances W. Barnes, 85, of Stonington, died early Monday morning, Feb. 5, 2007, at The Westerly Hospital.
The Guest Book is expired.
She was born in Westerly July 14, 1921, the daughter of Eben P. and Elizabeth Gavigan Weeden.
She attended local schools and graduated from Westerly High School with the class of 1939.
She married the man she always referred to as her "best friend," Frederick Amos Barnes on Aug. 6, 1949, in Ashaway. Throughout their life together, Frances treasured every minute spent with Fred. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage. Sadly he predeceased her on July 17, 2002.
For many years, she and Fred ran the family dairy farm in Mystic along Route 27. After selling the farm, they, along with her brother-in-law, Robert Barnes, owned and operated Barnes Moving and Storage Inc. Frances coordinated the day-to-day workings of the entire operation from her office. A strong woman, considered the matriarch of the business, she was very personable, always having something pleasant to say to anyone she met.
They loved to travel and together they did so extensively throughout the United States and Canada often from the comfort of their motor home. In later years they enjoyed spending their winters in Florida.
Family was most important to her, enjoying her children, and her sisters and brothers.
She was a UConn girls basketball fan, enjoyed going to Greyhound Rescue organization events but most of all enjoyed her independence, still driving up to her recent illness, and often taking scenic rides just for the pure joy of it. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church in Ashaway.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Geoffrey "Jeff" and Deborah Barnes of North Stonington and Patricia (Barnes) and Donald Guzek of Stonington; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, George Weeden of Hopkinton; a sister, Susan E. Palmer of Voluntown, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her siblings, Eileen Stewart and Eben Weeden.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. at Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may call at the funeral home from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 238 West Town St., Norwich, CT 06360.
The Barnes family would like to invite you to visit www.mysticfuneralhome.com for obituary information, directions, and an online memorial register to leave a note of condolence.
