Frederick "Ricky" J. Friedel, 68, of Pawcatuck, Conn., died peacefully on April 26, 2012 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn.
Born in Hartford, Conn., on April 7, 1944, he was the son of the late Frederick C. and Janet (Lee) Friedel.
He moved to Pawcatuck in 1950, where he remained a lifelong resident. He attended local schools, graduating from Stonington High School in 1962 and later attending Mitchell College in New London, Conn.
Frederick served in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1968. He completed his basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas, and was stationed in Iceland, among other places.
For the past 16 years, he was employed by Ortronics of New London, Conn., where he most recently held the position of Senior Sales Analyst. Fred was a valued employee who was recognized for his dedication and tireless work ethic.
He was a lifelong communicant of St. Michael Church in Pawcatuck, Conn. He was also a former member of the Westerly Yacht Club, the Pawcatuck Veterans of Foreign War and the Knights of Columbus.
Fred enjoyed boating, fishing, and spending time outdoors. He was also an accomplished chef and an avid gardener.
He is survived by his two children, David J. Friedel, MD, of Richmond, Va., and Kimberly J. Savino, of Pawcatuck, Conn. He also leaves his twin sister, Barbara Domingue, of Willimantic, Conn., and sister, Patricia Swain, of Pawcatuck, Conn. He was the grandfather of Nicholas and William Friedel of Richmond, Va. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth and brother Joseph Friedel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday May 3, 2012 at St. Mary Church, 95 Main St., Stonington, Conn. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly, R.I.
