John "Hap" McCormick, 72, of Pawcatuck Avenue, Watch Hill, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2008, unexpectedly at The Westerly Hospital.
He was born in Westerly, Oct. 7, 1935, son of the late James W. and Marion Purtill McCormick.
He graduated from the Portsmouth Priory in 1953 and from Harvard University in 1957. He served as a lieutenant with the United States Navy after attending Officer Candidate School.
He began his retail career with Bloomingdale's in New York City, and later moved to Bonniers, a specialty gift store in New York City, where he became president.
He married the former Karin Rosen in Stockholm, Sweden, on June 5, 1971. They moved to Westerly to make their home, and started The Paragon which grew to be a successful mail order business. John and Karin sold the company and retired in 1997.
John enjoyed his retirement years spending his time between Watch Hill and Spring Island S.C. He enjoyed golf, photography, birding and nature.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Karin; a daughter, Lisa and her husband, J. Matthew Mannix of Wilton, Conn.; a son, Brian and his wife, Kathryn, of Rowayton, Conn.; a sister, Anne M. Davis of Groton; a brother, James M. McCormick and his wife, Joan, of Watch Hill; and a granddaughter, Annika Louise Mannix of Wilton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of St. Clare in Misquamicut on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. Private interment will be held in River Bend Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
