Lucretta "Dede" (Schepis) Chiappone, 91, of 79 Watch Hill Road, Westerly, formerly of North Main Street, Stonington, passed away Monday, March 10, 2008, at the Watch Hill Care and Rehabilitation Facility in Watch Hill.

She was born in Stonington on Feb. 20, 1917, daughter of the late Paul and Katharine Squadrito Schepis.
A lifelong resident of Stonington, she began her working career at age nine in the family ice cream shop. She was a graduate of Stonington High School with the class of 1935.
She married Joseph Chiappone in St. Mary Church, Stonington on Nov. 23, 1938. Dede had worked with her husband operating the Stonington Market. Later she worked with her son Charlie and his wife who ran Schepis Package Store, which had been started by her father.
Dede was active in the community and had served as a Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed knitting and gardening and loved to cook for her family. She was a longtime communicant of St. Mary Church.
Dede is survived by her son, Charles and his wife Gayle of Stonington, her daughter, Janina Twiss of Pawcatuck; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; her great-grandson, Charles J. Barber; and her sister, Carmela Schepis.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Church, Stonington on Wednesday, March 12, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
