Samuel R. Blanda, 62, of Portsmouth, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Feb. 16. He was the son of Dorothy Blanda and the late Anthony J. Blanda Sr.

Raised in Westerly, Samuel was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. At one time a small business owner, Samuel enjoyed a long and varied career as a dedicated employee, most recently as a project manager at Raytheon. His interests ranged from lively political discussion to opera and theater. He was an enthusiastic sailor, having recently acquired a sailboat, returning to a beloved life-long hobby.
Samuel leaves his sons, Mark and Stephen, their wives, Keri and Julie, and three adored grandsons. He also leaves his brothers and sisters, Sylvia Blanda and Wally Young, Anthony and Gail Blanda, Mike Blanda and Wendy Markey, Louise and Bill Wright, and Diana Blanda and Cliff Smith. He also leaves many extended family.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, Feb. 21 from 5-7 p.m. at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 22 at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm St., Westerly. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Sebastian Cemetery.
