BRADFORD - William Douglass Peabody, of Diamond Hill Road, (Hopkinton) Bradford, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2014, at the age of 83.

Born in Pawcatuck, Conn., he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Edward Peabody and educated in the Stonington School System. Mr. Peabody was married to the former Shirley West of Ashaway.
He was the proud father of a son, Mark Bruce Peabody; and daughter-in-law, Donna Peabody, of New Prague, Minn.; and a daughter, Diane Louise Zanella, of Charlestown. He was also a proud grandfather of Taurean Phillip Zanella, Dillon Paul Zanella, Mandy Jean Peabody, Justin Dean Peabody and Luke Anthony Fusaro. Mr. Peabody entered the U.S. Marine Corps in August 1948. During his tour of duty he served his country in Korea, which included the invasion of Inchon, Sept. 15, 1950. He was awarded several medals and combat stars, unit citations with stars and a War Service Medal from the Republic of Korea. He returned home in August 1952 after attaining the rank of staff sergeant. Mr. Peabody achieved a very successful career in the plumbing, heating and fire protection fields. He went from installation to selling to buying, from estimating and design to supervision and business operation. He was Hopkinton's first plumbing and mechanical inspector. He was a building-plumbing-mechanical inspector for the City of Warwick from which he retired in August 1993. Mr. Peabody was awarded a Life Membership in the American Legion by his fellow Post members for filling many positions for many years, including post commander. He also held Life Memberships in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Korean War Veterans Association and the Ashaway Sportsman's Club where he held several positions including president. One of his pleasures was his 50 continuous years of association with the Ashaway Sportsman's Club's "Huck Finn Day" Project.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, April 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, April 29, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will follow at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly.
