PAWCATUCK, Conn. - Max Bertsch Jr., 76, of Pawcatuck, Conn., died suddenly on Tuesday, April 29, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (McCormick) Bertsch.

Born in Mystic, Conn., on May 28, 1937, he was the son of the late Max and Gladys (Crandall) Bertsch. Max was employed at Pfizer in Groton, Conn., for over 25 years. He was proud of his perfect work attendance during his career at Pfizer. He also worked at Davis Standard and as a carpenter for the University of Connecticut at Avery Point. Mr. Bertsch, along with his wife, owned and operated Tomorrow's Treasures Antique Store on Main St., in Westerly for many years. Max was an active member of Central Baptist Church in Westerly. He was also life member of the Mystic Hook and Ladder Company and served as the departments former assistant chief and a former member of the Mystic Ambulance Corporation. Mr. Bertsch served several years in the U.S. Army National Guard and was past president of the Pawcatuck Valley Coin Club. Max loved being on the water and fishing, scalloping and clamming from his boat. In his youth he enjoyed playing, baseball, basketball and bowling.
Besides his wife of over 45 years, he will be sadly missed by his children, Cheryl Hawkes and her husband, George, of St. John's, New Brunswick, Meredith Masucci and her husband, James, of Westerly, and Max Bertsch and his wife, Marie, of Westerly. He was the loving grandfather of Heidi, Hannah, Alison, Sheena, Nickala, Merissa, Vanessa and Max; and great-grandfather of Peter, Emily and Laila. He was the brother of John Bertsch, of Westerly and Gladys Hyra, of Melbourne, Fla.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, May 3, at 11 a.m. Central Baptist Church, 16 Elm St., Westerly. The Bertsch family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, May 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central Baptist Church Youth Fund, 16 Elm St,. Westerly, RI 02891.
