Born and raised in West Mystic, he was the son of Irving and Mary (Battistini) Allyn and was a lifelong resident of Mystic. Born from a lineage of seafarers, Walter was groomed for a life on the ocean beginning as a child fishing the Atlantic with his father and brother. His bond with the sea was put on hold when he entered the army serving in the Korean War. Upon his return to the United States, he began working at EB as an outside machinist. He was then employed by Supervisor of Shipbuilding as a civil servant where he advanced to supervisor of all mechanical and electrical operations until his retirement at age 51. In 1983, Walt purchased F/V Lauren Jo and began his own commercial fishing business. As time progressed, he owned and operated several large fishing vessels out of the port of Stonington. Walter was a lifelong member of the Southern New England Fisherman's and Lobstermen's Assoc. serving as Vice-President for several years. He enjoyed everything having to do with the ocean and successfully built several wooden boats throughout the years. He was a family man who deeply loved his wife, Ida, of 61 years.
Walt leaves his son, David Allyn and his wife, Donna, of Jensen Beach, FL; four grandchildren, Lauren, Irv, Paul and Katie Allyn; and two great-grandchildren, James and Juliette. He was predeceased by a son, James J. Allyn and a brother, Leonard Allyn.
