Carlton Jr., Herbert Erwin
Carlton Herbert Erwin Carlton, Jr., age 90, of Columbus, died Wednesday, May 20, 2015. He was born in Chicago, IL on May 21, 1924. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Emmagene Carlton, in May of 2013. Herb graduated from Chicago's Foreman High School in 1941 and he continued his education by enrolling in the Technological Institute of Northwestern University that same year. His educational career was interrupted by World War II. He volunteered in the U.S. Navy and eventually began serving in the radically new field of radar technology. His appointments climaxed in 1944-46 with service on the renowned aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. After the war he returned to Northwestern, graduating in 1948 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Shortly thereafter he was offered an internship at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus. As a consequence, he was employed at Battelle for the next forty-one years. Early in his career he was involved in the development of Xerography. His work, in collaboration with Battelle colleague Lewis E. Walkup, resulted in a patent on an electrostatic cleaning device for Xerox machines. In later years he was involved in projects to extract sulfur from coal to make it a cleaner burning fuel and safely to dispose of chemical weapons which had previously been assigned to the U.S. military. Herb was a humble, steadfast man devoted to his faith and family. Herb was a longtime member of Clinton Heights Lutheran Church. For many years he cared for his elderly mother, Henrietta, after she moved from Chicago to Columbus and also for his ailing wife, Emmagene. Herb enjoyed road trips with Emmagene, workouts at the YMCA, and playing bridge. He valued his bridge mates and friends, many of whom he met at Oakleaf Village on Karl road where he lived for the last twenty years of his life. He had a fine sense of humor. He is survived by daughters, Rosemarie Carlton and Susan (Don K.) Carlton Rowney; brother-in-law, Edward (Gladys) Green and their family; grandchildren, Kevin (Amber) Rowney and Christopher (Siobhan) Rowney; and four great grandsons. The family thanks friends and staff at Clinton Heights Lutheran Church, Oakleaf Village, Gentiva Hospice, and HomeWell Senior Care for their support. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 26 from 2-5 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTH CHAPEL, 5554 Karl Road, Columbus OH 43229. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Clinton Heights Lutheran Church, 15 Clinton Heights Ave., Columbus OH 43202. Memorial donations may be sent to Clinton Heights Lutheran Church or to the Capital Area Humane Society.
