Betty Jane Penn

Penn Betty Jane Penn, 93, of Titusville, Florida, was called to her heavenly home on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at the Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio surrounded by her loving family and her terrier companion, Sailor, at her bedside. Betty was born to the late Bessie Earnestine (Bell) and William Evans on April 16, 1920, in Oberlin, Ohio to the delight of her older brother William. Betty attended Pleasant Street Elementary and graduated from Oberlin High School. She received an Associate degree from The Oberlin Business School. She held the distinguished titles of wife, mother, and friend. She was known to all as a fabulous woman of faith, vitality, love and laughter. After moving to Columbus, she married the late Ernest "Roy" Savory, a native of Lynn, Massachusetts. In 1946, their union was blessed with one child, Ernest "Lee" Savory III. Her second union was with Marvin Thompson, and she entered into matrimony for the third time in 1976 with Kenneth "Kenny" H. Penn. Betty and Kenny moved to Titusville, Florida in 1978 where they enjoyed boating, golfing, cruising, community activities, and entertaining family and friends. Betty was an active member of the St. Philip Episcopal Church Choir and Women's Guild of Columbus, and subsequently St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church of Titusville, The Northeasterners, Links, Twig #110, Battery Park Yacht Club of Sandusky, Ohio and various other social and civic organizations. Betty used her business and management skills at Curtiss-Wright Corporation during World War II. After the war, she became office manager for Dr. John D. White, a prominent Columbus family practitioner and OB/GYN. She retired from the State of Ohio after many years in the Department of Job and Family Services as a claims manager. Betty is survived by her loving husband Kenneth Penn; son, Ernest "Lee" (Yolande McGee) Savory III; step-children, Kenneth Cornell Penn and Jackie Thompson; one grandchild, Hope Dorsey; sisters-in-law, Geraldine Savory-Taylor, Wanda Penn and Cheryl Adams; nieces-in-law, Loretta Taylor, Sharon (Senator William F.) Bowen and Andrea Adams; nephews-in-law, Roger Penn, Larry Adams, Curtis Adams and James "Satch" Sullinger; and life-long friends and neighbors, Laverne King, Joann Wininger, Alice DeYoung, Bessie Johnson, Betty Wilkins and Alberta Goode. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in honor of Betty Jane Penn to St. Philip Episcopal Church, Kobacker House (800 McConnell Dr., Columbus, OH 43214), St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church, or the North Brevard Senior Center (909 Lane Ave., Titusville, FL 32780). Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. (Musical Selections with Visitation) and 11 a.m. (Mass of the Resurrection), Saturday, January 25, 2014 at St. Philip Episcopal Church, 166 Woodland Ave., Columbus, OH 43203. A second service will be held at 12 Noon (Mass of the Resurrection), Sunday, February 9, 2014 at St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church, 414 Pine St., Titusville, FL 32782.
