George Henry Sawyer

Sawyer George Henry Sawyer, age 94, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2013. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on July 14, 1918, and devoted son of the late Carroll and Flora Sawyer. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Eleanor E. and brothers Harold E. Sawyer and Wm. Wesley Sawyer, and sister in-law Sallie Foreman. George graduated from North High School and received his B.S. in Agriculture from Tuskegee Institute. After completing his degree he served in the United States Army in World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Returning home from the war, George worked in the Sawyer family dry cleaning business, The Columbus Home Laundry Dry Cleaners. Shortly after working at the dry cleaners, George pursued a career with the US Postal Service where he retired after 30 years of service. George is survived by sisters-in-law, Gertrude Sawyer and Betty P. Sawyer, both of Columbus, OH; niece, Leslie J. Sawyer and husband, Rick Redmon of Columbus, OH; nephew, Dr. Wm. Gregory Sawyer and wife, Dr. Rita Gloria Sawyer of Simi Valley, CA; niece, Deborah M. Sawyer of Chicago, IL; nephew and caretaker, Harry A. Staples III of Columbus, OH; and many other extended family members and dear friends. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013 at SCHOEDINGER EAST CHAPEL, 5360 E. Livingston Ave., where family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. Interment Union Cemetery.
