Monsignor James Brennan Nugent

Nugent Monsignor James Brennan Nugent (10/26/1925-11/16/2013) at the Villas at St. Therese in Columbus. Born in Cambridge, Ohio, he was the youngest and last surviving child of Lawrence and Mary Slaymon Nugent. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, L. Paul Nugent (Cambridge,OH)Sr. Mary Nugent (Manitowoc, WI) Elizabeth Delong Winifred Hummer Msgr. Michael A. Nugent (Columbus, OH) Margaret Ellen Flanagan (Loveland, OH) Catherine O'Connor (Washington, D.C.) and Rose Farrell (Ft. Thomas, KY). He is survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Msgr. Nugent attended Xavier University and was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Steubenville by Bishop John Mussio on May 25, 1956. He received his PhD from The Catholic University of America in 1961 and taught philosophy, composition, and literature at the Steubenville seminary. His duties with the Diocese of Steubenville included work as the editor of the Steubenville Register, Diocesan Consultor, Ecumenical Committee, and as pastor at Holy Name Cathedral in Steubenville and at parishes: St. Therese (Piney Fork), St. John Vianney Mission, St. Thomas Moore (Bloomingdale), Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Jewett), and St. Mary's (Lafferty). Prior to his time in the seminary, Monsignor spent two years (1943-45) as an aviation cadet in the U.S. Army Air Corps and later was a member of the Catholic War Veterans. After his retirement in 1996, Msgr. Nugent moved to Columbus where he enjoyed the company of family and friends and personal interests in golf, reading, travel, puns, sweets, and continued ministry at several Columbus parishes. He will be remembered for his wit, intellect, and devotion to his Catholic faith. Many thanks to his dear friends and caregivers at the Villas, especially Jill, Dorothy, and Mary. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m., Monday, November 18, 2013 at NOVAK FUNERAL HOME, 4476 N. High St. Cols. 43214 (prayer service at 7:30 p.m.). Mass of Resurrection will be held Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Cambridge, Ohio at 11 a.m. (calling hour 10 a.m. at the church), concelebrated by Bishop Jeffrey Monforton, Rev. Lawrence Hummer (nephew of Msgr. Nugent), and Rev. Robert Borer of St. Benedict. Burial will immediately follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cambridge. Contributions may be made to St. Benedict Catholic Church or The Diocese of Steubenville.
