PANTALOS James "Jim" Pantalos, age 92, of Columbus, OH, died peacefully Friday, January 11, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Mary Pavlyak Pantalos; daughter, Jacquie Reed of Fishers, IN; son, George Pantalos of Louisville, KY; and five grandchildren. Jim was born in Argos, Greece and came through Ellis Island with his family as a small child. Jim was a graduate of Auburn High School in Auburn, NY. After serving in the 15th Air Force in north Africa and in southern Italy during WWII
, he returned to Miami University in Oxford, OH to complete his undergraduate studies in social work. Following graduate studies in social work at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh, he worked briefly in Jackson, MI, before moving to Columbus in 1952. He worked as a social worker at Columbus State Hospital and the Columbus City Health Department before joining the faculty of the School of Social Work at Ohio State University
in 1963 where he befriended and mentored numerous students until 1985 and continued to serve as the faculty advisor to Alpha Phi Omega well beyond his retirement. Throughout his life, Jim was a concert and jazz musician, playing with Ziggy Colye's dance band for many years as well as civic bands and orchestras in Central Ohio. Jim and Mary were members of St. James Episcopal Church upon arrival in Columbus, and have been members of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in recent decades. Jim was also an adult volunteer at COSI for many years. Calling hours will be at the RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, 515 High Street in Worthington, from 5-8 p.m. Monday, January 14, 2013. Funeral Service will be celebrated at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 555 North High Street, Columbus, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Burial will take place at St. Nicholas Cemetery in Auburn, NY.
