John Jacob Plappert

Plappert John Jacob Plappert, age 83, of Columbus, passed away Friday, February 28, 2014 at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry William and Rose Marie Plappert, and five brothers and sisters. He is survived by his son, John Jacob Plappert II and his partner, Amy Mays of New York City; his two grandsons, Colin A. Plappert and Jonathan W. Plappert; and many friends. While attending Ohio University, 'Jack' married Barbara Louise Goltz and they gave birth to his only son. After graduating with a degree in Geology, Jack moved to northern California where he began his lengthy career in Geology. His work eventually focused on specialized Hydrology projects, which included his pride project, the Edmonston Pumping Plant near the south end of the California Aqueduct. The plant lifts water 1,926 feet from below ground, up over the Tehachapi Mountains and to this date, is still the most powerful water lifting system in the world. Jack was very proud of this project. Jack was an avid golfer and while he lived in Tallahassee, Florida, he won several club tournaments while he was an active member of Killearn Country Club. After being away for years, he ultimately moved back to Ohio to return to his roots and live closer to his family. Private burial service was held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 7, at Byron Cemetery in Fairborn, Ohio. Arrangements by MORRIS SONS FUNERAL HOME, 104 W. Main St., Fairborn, Ohio. The family wishes memorial contributions directed to The James (Ohio State's James Cancer Hospital). Condolences can be sent to
