Marie Pfeiffer Obituary

Pfeiffer Marie Stoll Pfeiffer. It was in a farmhouse built in 1896 just outside the Village of Beaver on State Route 335 where she was born, joining a household that included grandfather, Noah Gilliland, parents, Henry and Hattie Stoll, and brother, William. Her thirst for education earned her a diploma in 1937 from Beaver High School and three degrees from the Ohio State University, the last being a Ph.D. in family life and child development. Her career included leading the Columbus City Schools' home economics department and the home economics department at California State Polytechnic College (Cal Poly). She was an elected member of the Ohio State Board of Education, serving eight years. On December 31, 1941, she eloped with Richard Coy Pfeiffer. Marrying our father was her life's best decision. Dick Pfeiffer asked for little but gave much. When he died in 1997, he made sure his widow could remain comfortably in their home on Cooke Road, in Columbus, where she died on November 1, 2014 at the age of 94. She and Dick raised their family on Chatham Road in the Clintonville neighborhood of Columbus in a house they bought when Dick came back from his Army service in WW II. It was a friendly neighborhood where their children, Patty and Rickie, played with the Boesch and Starkey kids without getting into serious trouble. They left Chatham in 1965. She was active in the American Association of University Women (State President), the Columbus Chapter of the Business and Professional Women, Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed domestic and foreign travel. Although a Methodist in her youth, she became a member of the First Congregational Church following her marriage. Her daughter and son survive her; as do her daughter-in-law, Janet; three grandchildren, Sacha (Hansi), Sonya (David) and Seth; and Sonya's daughter, Zayne. A private memorial service will be held later. If you wish to acknowledge her life, a donation to the Concerts at First Church, 444 East Broad Street, Col., OH, 43215 or to your favorite charity is what she would want. Marie was always interested in my teaching adventures and always encouraged me to become a published author of educational articles. Her knowledge of politics and educational bills on both the state and national levels was astounding. She was an amazing woman and a cherished member of our Beta Lambda Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Rick, Janet and family,

Marie was a bright light and a ringing bell. I am richer for having known both her and Dick. My family, in a very much smaller way, shares your loss. It's hard to lose a parent.
