Schmitt, Gene
Gene William Schmitt, age 90, formally of Whitehall and St. Paris, Ohio, passed away on September 13, 2018 at Canal Winchester Care Center. Gene was born on September 25,1927 in Columbus. He was an industrial sewing machine mechanic with Singer and RG Barry Corp. Starting his own business in 1968. Gene honorably served in the US Navy at the ending of World War II, on the destroyer escort USS A.J. Luke and the troop transport, USS West Point. Gene enjoyed golf, hunting, family and generally just loved life. As a hunter, he was a three time Ohio Big Bucks inductee. He fished and played golf past his 90th birthday. Gene is survived by sons, Ken (Fran) Schmitt, Ray (Cindy) Schmitt, Joseph (Janet) Schmitt; grandchildren, Pete (Beth) Schmitt, Elizabeth (Steve) Cox, Kevin (Michele) Tuhy, Kelly (Aaron) Grover and Ryan (Justine) Tuhy; great-grandchildren, Lucas and Wyatt Schmitt, Ethan and Caleb Cox, Anne and Elle Tuhy, Cole Cahill, Maddison and Morgan Tuhy; niece, Lorraine Grinstaff; Beatrice's grandson, Ron West. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Jane (Tudor) Schmitt; mother, Mabel Grace Hinton; and father by adoption, Earl John Schmitt; sister, Eileen Mensel; niece, Ruth Mensel; and special friend Beatrice Gillespie. Geno, as he was affectionately called, also loved, and was loved, by many friends and the members of the extended family of Wilbur and Bertha Tudor. A memorial visitation will be held on THURSDAY, September 20, 2018 from 4 - 6 PM at the PFEIFER FUNERAL HOME, Reynoldsburg, where his service will immediately follow with Pastor John Ennis officiating.
