(Marion) Jean Cowan Bell, 92, entered eternal life on Saturday, August 4, 2018. She was born in Detroit, MI, August 2, 1926, daughter of Edward Cowan, Jr. and Marion H. Johnson, who preceded her in death, as did her brother Edward H. Cowan. She grew up in Michigan and graduated from Royal Oak High School in 1944. In 1948, she received her B.A. from Albion College, and was married to Louis E. Bell, whom she met while they were students. He preceded her in death in 2004. Jean was a teacher of Latin and English in several school districts in Ohio, retiring in 1987 from Wapakoneta City Schools. Jean was a member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church where she was active for many years in the United Methodist Women, Chancel Choir, Elizabeth Circle, and served at one time on the education and mission committees. She was initiated into the P.E.O. Sisterhood in June 1947, and was active in several chapters in Ohio. Jean also spent 15 years as a Volunteer at Riverside Hospital. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Dawn of Downingtown, PA, David and Christine of Cleveland Heights, OH, Peter and Cheryl of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; two daughters, Susan and her husband, Dean Slusser of St. Mary's, GA and Cathy Mullin of Gahanna, OH; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Memorial Service will be held at Maple Grove United Methodist Church, 7 W. Henderson (at High St.) on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at 1:30 pm with Rev. Patricia Wagner officiating. Family will receive friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to the Memorial Fund at Maple Grove UMC; the P.E.O. Foundation, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312-2899; or the Columbus Foundation, Friendship Village of Columbus Fund, 1234 E. Broad St., Columbus, OH 43205.
