Max Joseph Lerner Obituary
LERNER Dr. Max Joseph Lerner. You can shed tears that he is gone, or you can smile because he lived and touched so many lives. Dr. Max Joseph Lerner passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 leaving his loving wife, Jean Lerner, after 67 years of marriage. He was born on September 25, 1920 in Cambridge, Ohio to Frank and Ada Lerner. He enjoyed being a part of a family that included three sisters, Martha Oakley, Dorothea Knott Warden, Catherine Fultz; and two brothers, Louis and Paul. On December 7, 1945, he married the love of his life, Jean Hart. Max's lifelong career was in the field of education. He started out as an industrial arts teacher in Reynoldsburg. In 1948 he moved to Ashland as the Supervisor of Industrial and Adult Education. Lorain became his home in 1953, where he was the Director of Adult Education and Supervisor of Industrial Education. He became the founding father and first president of Lorain County Community College in 1963. When he returned to Columbus, Max became the Vice Chancellor for the Ohio Board of Regents. Unable to stay retired, Max worked as the Executive Director of Ohio Career Colleges and Schools until he was 88. Over the years, he received many distinguished awards honoring his educational and community accomplishments. Max enjoyed playing cards, traveling, golfing and enjoying adventures with his friends and family. He had a keen sense of humor, never met a stranger, and always had a story or joke to share. He will be best remembered for his ready smile, his sunny disposition, his zest for life and his love for his family. Max's death leaves an empty place in the hearts of his children, Linda, Lana, Lorie; his sons-in-law, Todd and Joe; his grandchildren, Tiffany, Ryan, Erin, Andrew, Max and Keith; and his great-grandchildren, Grayson, Emory, Brynn and Ella. Friends are invited to visit the family at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL at 1740 Zollinger Rd., Columbus on Saturday, January 12, 2013 from 1-3 p.m. A celebration of Max's life will begin at 3 p.m. with his daughter, Rev.
