Robert McMillen Obituary
McMillen, Robert
1929 - 2018
Robert Dean "Bob" McMillen, age 89, passed away on Friday, September 7, 2018 in Burlingame, California. Bob was born on August 24, 1929 in Wooster, Ohio, to Alma Devona (Marshall) and William Frederick McMillen. Bob attended Ada High School, where he excelled on the track and football teams. After graduating in 1947, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Ohio Northern University in 1951, and then completed post-graduate work in traffic engineering at Yale University. Bob began his professional career with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District One office in Lima, Ohio, and then transferred to the central office in Columbus. His positions with ODOT included State Traffic Engineer and Governor's Highway Safety Representative. During his early days in Columbus, he also spent seven years as the Assistant Chief Traffic Engineer for the city. After thirty years in government service, Bob transitioned to consulting engineering positions at Edwards and Kelcey in Livingston, New Jersey, and DeLeuw Cather & Company in Phoenix, Arizona, Pasadena, California and Newport Beach, California. During the mid-eighties, he also enjoyed a two-year assignment as the Traffic and Safety Engineer for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where he co-authored the Saudi Arabian Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Bob truly loved all aspects of traffic engineering; his career as a Professional Engineer spanned forty-six years. While raising children in Columbus, Bob was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian and Overbrook Presbyterian churches, and was active as a troop leader with the Boy Scouts. During his retirement years, Bob thoroughly enjoyed the staff and his many friends at Sterling Court in San Mateo, California. Bob was preceded in death by an infant son Mark Alan McMillen. He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Jean Waterhouse McMillen of San Mateo, California; sister, Evonda (Daniel) Machir of Troy, Michigan; daughter, Lynne (Fredric) Fitter of Winthrop, Maine; son, R. Scott McMillen (Michael Malone) of San Francisco, California; and grandchildren, Jennifer Fitter of Boston, Massachusetts and Thomas Fitter of Dallas, Texas. Private burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima, Ohio.
