Claudine Gordon Obituary
Claudine Gordon was the second oldest child born to the late Jerome (Bill) Williams and Ruby Troupe Williams. He later married Iola Dulaney Williams who was her loving stepmother. She was raised in Forrest City, graduating from Lincoln High School. She went on to cosmetology school and worked for a number of years as a licensed beautician. Claudine confessed a hope and belief in Christ at an early age. She was a member of Salem M.B. Church.
Claudine married Ramey Gordon in 1957, and they were together for almost 40 years. Two sons were born to this union, Gregory Tyrone Gordon and Cedric Angelo Gordon. They also raised five of their grandchildren.
Claudine spent most of her adult life in Chicago, where she was very active in her church and the community. She originally joined Christ Tabernacle under the direction of Pastor Milton Brunson and sang and traveled worldwide with the legendary "Chicago Thompson Community Singers." She was also active with Austin Presbyterian Church where she founded a community soup kitchen. She received numerous awards and accolades for her various community activism.
Claudine, when faced with the challenge of raising her grandchildren with limited community cultural options, decided to start her own. She created a dance troupe offering jazz and ballet. With a vision she also started a marching band for youth known as the New Frontier of Culture. Her home was ground central where hundreds of young people came for rehearsals, getting fed both physically and spiritually. Her efforts were so successful that youth participated in countless parades and other community activities, even attending and performing at two Super Bowl game half-time shows.
Claudine lived an active life. She loved traveling and going places. She loved food and being beautiful. Her goal was to always return to Arkansas to her family roots.
Claudine departed this life on Friday, May 11 , 2018.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons. She was also preceded in death by seven siblings, Erma Ruth Woodus, Ethel L. Wilson, Lavern Alexander, General Williams, Harold Jerome Williams, Billy Williams and Carl Williams.
