THOMASTON - Mr. Grady Donald McCrary, age 75, of Thomaston, Ga. died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2013 at Upson Regional Medical Center after a six-month battle with cancer.
Mr. McCrary was born on August 29, 1938 in Butler, Ga. to the late Rudolph McCrary and Mozelle Wilkes. The family moved to Thomaston, Ga. during his toddler years. At the early age of 16 he started working in the local textile mill. He attended night classes thru Upson Tech and was one of the first to graduate from welding technology. With that degree, he went on to gain employment thru General Motors and worked there until he was forced to retire following a massive heart attack in 1993. He was a member of East Thomaston Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his brother, Randy McCrary.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Laverne Birdsong McCrary, one stepson Steve Birdsong, 2 daughters Debra (Jim) Hester, Lyn (Ed) Manner, 2 sons, Keith McCrary and David (Lori Beth) Reeves. He has 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. One Brother, Charlie "Mac" (MaryAnne) McCrary, two sisters, Janie (Dean) Evans and Gloria (Jerome) Phillips. He has several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Mr. McCrary was held Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. at East Thomaston Baptist Church.
It was always his desire to have his body donated to Emory University School of Medicine and Research in hopes that he could in some way continue to help others even after his death.
