Elva Hall "Betts" Hardy, 92, of Harrisonburg, passed away Friday, May 17, 2013 at Emeritus Senior Living.

Elva was born in Rockingham County on July 2, 1920, and was a daughter of the late Edward Harrison and Ressie (Guyer) Garber.

She started her earlier years working in the grocery industry with her father and uncle who founded Red Front Supermarket, along with another dozen small country stores in Virginia and West Virginia. In the late 40's and early 50's they opened a small grocery store in Rushville and Dayton. In the late 50's she worked in the grocery department at the Harrisonburg Farm Bureau. In 1961 she moved to West Point, VA, where she worked for A&P Grocery. In her later years she worked for Eastern State Hospital teaching ceramics.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three husbands, John Wilfong who passed away in 1958, William Thomas Hall, who passed away March 21, 1976, and Thomas Lamar Hardy, who passed away February 21, 1998; a brother, Paul E. Garber; and two sisters, Helen Lincoln and Ethel Garber.

Elva is survived by a daughter, Betty Jane Knicley (Bruce) of Bridgewater; two sons, Ed Hall (Janie) of Harrisonburg, William "Skip" T. Hall, Jr. (Sandra) of West Point, VA; two step daughters, Sheila H. Gaines of Lizella, GA, Sharon E. Waters of Macon, GA; two step sons, Tim Hardy of Macon, GA, and Douglas L. Hardy of Macon, GA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Ricky Knicley, Ronnie Knicley, Scot Knicley, JJ Hall, Linda Knicley Andrews, Dale Hall, and Tommy Hall; eleven great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater, with Rev. Isaac Harper officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Horeb Church Cemetery in Hinton.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m. Monday, May 20, 2013 at the funeral home.
