Sgt. Sanchez Obituary

Sgt. Mark Steven Sanchez February 22, 1961 - June 11, 2014 Sgt. Mark Steven Sanchez was born in Encino, California as a twin on February 22, 1961. He and his family moved to Humboldt County in 1969. Mark attended Worthington Elementary School where he met his life long best friend Everett; attended Zane Middle School; and graduated Eureka High School Class of 1979. In 1980 Mark enlisted in the United States Army where he served six years; later enlisting in the Army National Guard to continue his 18 years of service. During his time of service he was part of Detachment 1 570th/670th Military Police out of Eureka, California and he was a veteran of the Gulf War. Mark was a life member of VFW Post 2481 of McKinleyville where he was also acting Post Commander and a member of the Honor Guard. He was a Life Member of and adjutant of AmVets Department of California Humboldt County Post 96, Board of Director for AmVets Department of California Service Foundation, Legislative Commissioner for AmVets Department of California and a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Among the many organizations served, he was also the Owner/Operator of Bella Baskets in Old Town Eureka. Giving back to his community made him a true American hero; however, Mark's biggest accomplishments were raising his daughter Brittany and later marrying Laurie, the love of his life. Mark is survived by his grandmother Lee Basso, his mother Maryann Smith and stepfather Bill, his wife Laurie Sanchez, daughter Brittany Sanchez, his brother Danny Sanchez (Pilar), sisters Susan Sanchez-Morgan and Leslie Albright (Alex), his step-sister Carla DeReuter-Pennetta, his nephews Steven Morgan (Whitney), Bradley Morgan and Travis Adams as well as many other extended family members. He is preceded by his father Concepsion Sanchez Jr. Friends and family are invited to attend a viewing Monday, June 23rd at Sanders Funeral Home from 3 -7 pm. A Military Graveside Service with Honors will be held Tuesday June 24th at noon at Oceanview Cemetery with a Celebration of Life following at the Elks Lodge of Eureka. In lieu of flowers please donate to the AmVets Department of California Welcome Home Program or go to www.giveforward.com and search for Vietnam War Remembrance Wall. Laurie, Brittany, Mark's extended family and all his friends, we have all lost such a wonderful man and oh so young. I will forever remember our last class reunion meeting not even two days before your passing, your smile your laughter and of course your blue checkered shirt.
