Porsley, Joy Dolores
JOY DOLORES PORSLEY died peacefully in her home on April 27, 2015 in Fortuna, California at the age of 85. Joy is survived by her appreciative and thankful children Russell Porsley, Andrew Porsley, and John Porsley; her adoring grandchildren Candace, Megan, Russell, & Mira; admiring siblings Marilyn, Jean, Eleanor, Robert and Bill. She is preceded in death by siblings Lawrence, Leo, and Neal. Joy was born on April 11, 1930 in Boston, Massachusetts to her parents Marion and Lawrence. She studied nursing at Boston City Hospital, graduating in 1952 as a Registered Nurse (RN). She was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force and was stationed both stateside and overseas where she traveled across Europe. Back home, the family moved to California. She was married to Keith Porsley for 38 years. They met at UC Berkeley where they were both students. She graduated from UC San Francisco in 1975 with a Masters in Nursing (MS). After moving to Alamo, CA, Joy continued working for hospitals around the Bay Area. Over the next few years the couple welcomed three boys into their home. As they grew, one of Joy's highest priorities was to model for them to always "choose happiness". Joy's children remember her as a giving mother who encouraged them to be individuals and to pursue their dreams. Joy was accomplished at reaching out to others and spent much of her career supporting people who were in recovery from substance abuse. She was an extroverted individual who loved people, loved life, and who was passionate about her grandchildren. Two of her many volunteer efforts included being a chaplain and also a hospice worker. She enjoyed swimming with her Pool Pals, singing with the Beaus & Belles and sauntering with the Red Hatters. Her sons will be hosting "A Joyful Celebration" on Saturday May 2nd to be held at the Royal Crest Senior Club House on Crest Drive in Fortuna from 2 - 4pm. At this informal gathering we would love for you to share stories about Joy. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of Humboldt. Please sign the guestbook at under obituaries.
