Capt. Burt T. Bessellieu Burt was born January 13, 1927 in Oakland, California and set out on his eternal voyage April 1, 2014 from Eureka, California. We know he is enjoying sea breezes and smooth sailing with whatever challenges he would enjoy thrown in. We miss him so much but know he is also watching over us. He was preceded in death by his parents Claude and Bess Bessellieu; numerous other family members in and outside of California, as well as sister-in-law Pat Simonson; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Margaret and Bryce Kane. Burt is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, (Joy) Lorraine; his daughters Cindy and Mardi; his grandchildren Sara (Justin Biondini), Cori (Brett Crofts), Shelby Harris (Gabe Bishop-Kunz) and Antony Bessellieu-Hill (Teresa Glidewell); his great-grandchildren Cameron Crofts, Jarren Biondini, Jace Biondini, and Baby-Girl Crofts who has not blessed us with her birth (or name) as yet; brother-in-law Bob Simonson; niece Lucy Simonson; nephews Carl Simonson (Katie) and Bob Simonson (Kathie) and great-nephew Mathew; niece Pom (Percy) Cartwright and their children and families; cousins and others abundant in Texas and elsewhere. Burt is also survived by our very special friend (of Cindy's) who is also considered family, (Pierce) Gene Hanson. He provided support and caring to Dad in life as well as to the rest of the family and is an essential member of our clan. We would also like to thank our Visiting Angels gals who tirelessly have provided support and care for Lorraine and at times Burt while he was with us; to the staff of Pacific Rehab who took good care of Burt and us during his short stay there; and all our family, friends, and co-workers who have sent food, cards, thoughts and prayers. Burt had such an interesting life which was full of love, accomplishment and giving. Please join us in a celebration of his life and memorial to it on May 4, 2014 at 2:00 pm (14:00) at the Eureka Elks Lodge, 445 Herrick Ave., Eureka, California 95503. In lieu of flowers Burt's family would like to suggest donations to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95503. Arrangements are under the care of Goble's Fortuna Mortuary. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com and click on obituaries.

Dear Lorraine, Cindy and Mardi, We were sorry to hear of Burt's death and have been waiting for something to appear in the paper. We have had a long history with the two of you and appreciate the fact that he was instrumental in our coming to our life in Eureka
. We will be in the East when the memorial is held but will stop by and say hi the next time we are in Eureka. In the meantime, a card will be on its way to all of you. Blessings and Love, Ann and Paul

Oh, Cindy, you lost your father just 2 days after our "mini-reunion." I'm so glad that we conversed about how important he is to Humboldt's history for his many years as a harbor pilot. May happy memories for your father comfort you and your family, Cindy.
