Don Charles Camp 03/01/1937 to 10/22/2013 Don Charles Camp passed away peacefully on 10/22/2013 after suffering a stroke in February. He was able to spend most of his remaining days at the home that he bought, designed and built an addition to. Don was born March 1st, 1937 in Cleveland, Ohio. His family moved to Ukiah California in 1948. He attended Pomolita Middle School and Ukiah High School, graduating in 1955. On the night of his high school graduation, Don met the love of his life, Betty at the skating rink. They both were excellent skaters. He served in the Navy on the U.S.S. Bennington during the Korean War
in the Sea of Japan and was a radio operator. After the military, he returned to Ukiah. When the 101 was closed, he traveled over the unpaved Bell Springs road with Richard Rea (Betty's brother) to get to Arcata, where Betty attended Humboldt College. There he proposed to her, and they were married in 1958. They lived in Ukiah until 1965, when they moved to Arcata permanently and bought a house in Sunny Brae. Don worked as a laboratory technician for Georgia Pacific and then Louisiana Pacific for 35 years. He was a union member and representative. Don belonged to the Arcata Presbyterian church, Lions Club, and served on the City of Arcata Transportation Committee for many years. Betty and Don were docents of the Dunes. He also supported Betty during her teaching years at Arcata High by helping with Future Homemakers of America-Home Economics Related Occupations events and chaperoning dances. He traveled with her to many places to gain experiences for her teaching such as living in Mexico, and visiting pre-schools in China. A great thrill in his life was climbing the Great Wall of China. His hobbies were puttering around the house and reading. The family has many cherished memories of seeing Shakespearian plays in Ashland, camping and watching MASH together. He was preceded in death by his parents Jessy Ann Howe Camp and Kenneth Don Camp, his bothers-in-law Robert Lewis, and Richard Rea. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Betty Elizabeth Camp, daughters Dawn Michelle Seeley and Rea Anne Erickson, grand-daughters Rea Adaire Brown, Jessica Seeley, and Katherine Erickson, his sisters Diane Lewis and Christy Trouette and her husband Keith, and sister-in-law Merryanne, great-grandchildren Bo and Jason, and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. The family would like to thank Nancy Reichard for her care and companionship. A memorial is being planned for a future date and will be held in Ukiah.
