Edward William Schmidt Sr.

Edward William Schmidt Sr. Edward William Schmidt Sr. passed away on October 17, 2012 in Eureka, CA. He was 83 years old. Ed was born on March 4, 1929 in Oakland CA. He spent his early years in the Petaluma/Santa Rosa area. In Tacoma WA, he met and married his wife, Beverly Edna Heddinger who preceded him in death in 2004. He served honorably in the United States Air Force. In 1954 he moved the family to Eureka, CA and worked at Red's Rod Shop with his childhood friend, Red Christiansen. He also worked for Bucksport Auto Spot. Later he was able to buy this business with Mel Sample, as his partner. After retirement he worked for Rich Barber Construction. Ed was an auto/small engine mechanic. He liked to race midgets and later stock cars at Redwood Acres, on the dirt track. He was always very competitive with his Ford cars. He was an avid bird hunter and raised Labrador Retriever hunting dogs. He taught most of his children to hunt and each year the family would gather at Lower Klamath Lake to hunt ducks, pheasants, and geese. He often said that this was the best time of his life. Ed is survived by his children: Luanne Stark (Matt), Edward Schmidt Jr., Carol Merkley, Michael Heddinger, Diane Wolff (Steve), Bruce Heddinger (Margi), Jo Anne Frick and brother, Franklin Schmidt. Grandchildren: Kirsten Bowns, Steve Frick (Heather), Rusty Heddinger (Elizabeth), Ron Heddinger (Cara), Angelic Lange (Scott List), Stephenie Sutherland (Curtis), Jessica Wolff, Brandy Lejano (Alberto), Jennifer Shaw and Machelle Martinez. Great-Grandchildren: David, Andrew, Garrett, Madelyn, Ryan, Holly, Matteya, Matthew, Michael, Samantha, Kyle, Jasmine, Amanda, Seth, Layla, Kianna, Kylie, Dustin, Brittani, Charlie, Elijah and Reece. Numerous nieces and nephews. Ed is also preceded in death by his parents: Harry and Gertrude Schmidt, older brother, Robert and sister in law, Beth Schmidt. Special "Thank You" to the staff at Frye's Care Home for their patience, humor and caring. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 24th at 1 p.m. at the Elk's Lodge In lieu or flowers, remembrances may be made to the California Water Fowl Assoc. or Hospice of Humboldt.
