Francoise Vermeirsch Fox Francoise, a former resident of McKinleyville, passed away peacefully in Eureka on April 3, 2013. Born April 16, 1935, in Dolhain-Limburg, in the French-speaking region of Belgium where her father was a teacher, she grew up on the Flemish coast in the resort city of Blankenberge. Her parents were Rene Vermeirsch and Jenny Debeen. After college in Brugge, Belgium, Francoise became a middle-school gymnastics teacher. During those years she loved to ski with her sisters in France and Austria, where she eventually met her future husband. She spoke four languages. Francoise married Stephen Fox in 1963 and began her life in the United States. After her husband's career in the Navy, the couple, with one son, Kevin, moved to Cincinnati. Two years after the birth of a second son, Chris, they moved first to Eureka, then McKinleyville. As the boys grew, the family spent several summers in Belgium visiting family. She loved telling her sons of her adventures as a small girl during the war, when the Germans occupied her town. When her sons were in high school, Francoise began a new career as a teacher's aide at the Dow Prairie school, where she remained for thirteen years. Following retirement, she and Steve continued to ski each winter. They also traveled to Alaska, South America and China. Francoise also supported Steve's research and writing. Francoise loved to read and participated in a book club for many years before her illness. She also made many friends at HealthSport. Francoise raised two fine sons, Kevin and Chris. She is survived in California by her husband, Steve, her sons and four grandchildren, by two sisters in Belgium, Rosane and Annie Vermeirsch, by a niece and nephew in Belgium and many cousins. A memorial service is being planned for a few weeks hence. Please contact Steve at 822-8041 for details. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com
