Gerald Eugene "Jay" Grunert Jay Grunert passed away peacefully on October 27, 2012 at the age of 90 years and two months with his family at his side. Jay was born on August 16, 1922 in the two-story house located on the southwest corner of Eighth street and Main in Fortuna, never moving more than four blocks in his 90 years of life. Jay and Wilda Schroder were married on November 2, 1947. He was an avid businessman in Fortuna. At the age of 18, he was half owner in the old Quality Hardware. He was a partner in the Fortuna Savings and Loan, and a major stockholder and bank officer in Bank of Loleta until it's sale to U.S. Bank. He was most noted for owning Grunert's Sporting Goods, located on main street in Fortuna. There he served his customers for 30 years, before retiring to the family ranch in Trinity County. It was there he spent what he called "The greatest days of my life!" He was a 69 year member of Eel River Empire Lodge #147 F&AM, a 65 year member of Scottish Rite Masons, a 65 year member Aahmes Shrine and a 60 year member of Rohnerville Redwood chapter #76 O.E.S. He especially enjoyed telling stories, playing 31 and pinochle. Dad would say, "Just bring quarters and we will teach you the game as we go along." He also enjoyed trapping, fishing for trout and hunting with family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Wilda, two sons Philip Grunert and wife Diane of Fortuna, Larry Grunert and Angel Russell of Mckinleyville, grandsons Kevin Grunert of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Tyler Grunert of Fortuna. He is also survived by several nieces. His brother Norm Grunert of Grunert's plumbing preceded him in death. Services will be at Goble's Mortuary in Fortuna on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at 11:00 AM followed by "Memories" at the Fortuna Fire Department, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 from 12:00 to 5:00 PM, at Goble's Fortuna Mortuary, Fortuna, California.
