Gerald Fielding Jackson "Judd" Gerald Fielding (Judd) Jackson was born to Agnes Teresa Fielding and John Leonard Jackson on May 7, 1923 in Dayton, Washington. He passed away on February 11, 2013 from heart failure. Judd started school in a one-room school house located on his father's sheep ranch southeast of Pomeroy, Washington. In 1934 he moved with his parents and siblings Dale, Beryl, Lois, John and Bill to Eureka, California. They moved to this area because his mother was born and raised in Ferndale. His parents bought the Green Hill Ranch in Eureka. Judd started school at the Nazareth Catholic grammar school, and then went on to Eureka High School. He met and married Claire Bryant in 1942. The family spent many memorable vacations camping in the redwoods and water skiing at Big Lagoon, Shasta and Trinity Lakes. His hobbies were hunting, fishing, collecting Lionel model railroading trains, and traveling. There were darn few machines that he couldn't fix or make run better. His first job was delivering the Standard newspaper by bicycle and then later on he used his 1931 Harley-Davidson "74" to deliver papers to the Carson Lumber Camp in Elk River and also to the town of Falk. He also had a job as a gas station attendant at Sig Sampson's Mobil gas station located at Harris and California streets in Eureka. Judd started his lumber career at the California Barrel Factory in Arcata. He then moved on to the Hammond Lumber Co. in Samoa. After that he worked for Holmes Eureka Lumber Co. in Bucksport. Judd also worked at the Rockport Lumber Co. in Rockport and the Northern Redwood Lumber Co. in Korbel. Then he and his two brothers John and Bill owned and operated a small Redwood sawmill east of what is now Baywood Golf and Country Club. In 1947 he went to work with James Frankie to build Twin Parks Lumber Co... The mill was located at Sunset Ave. in Arcata. Judd was involved in all aspects of running the mill from sawyer, logging boss, and then general manager. The mill was shutdown in 1979 due to the Redwood National Park expansion. Judd then worked for Bill Pierson's Building Center for twenty-nine years. His special thanks go out to Bill Pierson, Morgan Randall, Linda Crozier, and Cliff Fridley and many more for all the kind things they helped him with. Judd was the last surviving charter member of the fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly #56. He was the last surviving board member of St. Bernard's Cemetery in charge of placing the cemetery into perpetual care. He was active in the CYO in Eureka, California. He and his brother John were very instrumental in creating the St. Bernard High School athletic field. Judd was loved and will be missed by everyone who knew him. He was a man of great integrity, wisdom and old school work ethics. We will miss seeing that mischievous smile and hearing that great laugh. Judd is preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife Claire, of 70 years, and his children and their spouses, Linda and Joe Williams of Maple Creek, John of Arcata, Richard and his fiance Christine Barkdull of Fortuna, Jo Ann and Rick Rossen of McKinleyville, Jerry and Patty of Eureka, Diane and Richard Heinl of Roseville, Mary and Terry Vallee of Blue Lake, Daniel of McKinleyville, Sharon and Dave Simpson of Redding, Donna and Mark Gervase of Fort Smith, Montana, and Carolyn and Doug Griffith of Tigard, Or.
