Gerald Leland "Jerry" Ross

Gerald "Jerry" Leland Ross Jerry was born December 21, 1950, in Eureka, CA, to Ronald and Ruth Ross and passed away January 8, 2013 in Redding. He graduated from Eureka High in 1969. He began his 30-year career in veterinary medicine at 14 years old, cleaning Broadway Animal Hospital for Dr. Lochtie in Eureka, CA, and working his way up to manager. From there he went on to manage Sunny Brae Animal Clinic. Jerry was instrumental in developing a program to train veterinary assistants as animal nurses, which became the Registered Veterinary Technicians program. He was appointed by then Governor Pete Wilson as Chairman of the Board of Consumer Affairs, overseeing the RVT program. He was also a member of the Board of Veterinary Medicine. While living in Eureka, Jerry served as Deacon at Christ Episcopal Church; was active with the Jazz Festival; Ducks Unlimited (Eureka); Northcoast Repertoire Theatre; and Masonics, serving as master of Humboldt Masonic Lodge #79 in 1978. He possessed an eager entrepreneurial spirit, willing to learn and do just about anything, including skydiving, scuba diving, playing softball and soccer, driving his '68 Mustang "Sally" to Hot August Nights in Reno every year for 25 years, or to Kool April Nights in Redding; partnering in H&R Associates, a veterinary supply business; and formerly owning Arcata Tuxedo. He was especially known for organizing parties for his many friends and dancing to "Oldies" Rock 'n Roll music. He always tried to make sure everyone was having a good time. He left Eureka in 1999, moving to Idaho to work for MWI, a veterinary supply corporation, but returned to California in 2003, settling in Redding and changing to a real estate career to work for his son at Ross Mortgage. For a few years, he also chaired the Redding Chapter of Ducks Unlimited annual fund-raising dinner, working hard to make the dinners successful. Jerry's illness forced his early retirement. Still, he always put others' needs before his own and his illness didn't stop his loving spirit. He made wonderful, life-long friends wherever he went. His immediate and extended families miss him so much, but are grateful his suffering is over. They find comfort in the assurance that Jerry is with his Lord. Jerry's father, Ronald Ross, and his older brother, Donald Ross, predeceased him. He is survived by his mother, Ruth Ross, his loving wife, Gwendolyn Jackson; his devoted children, Steven Ross (Summer) of Redding, and Chrissy Silva (JR) of Casselberry, FL; his very special grandchildren, Stephanie and Amanda Silva, Levi Ross and Sadie Ross; his sisters, Katherine Purcell of Lewiston, CA, and Barbara Kules of Nampa, ID; his brothers, Robert Ross of Eureka and Michael Ross of Lincoln, NE; his father-in-law, Bennie Vigil; his step-sons, Richard, Jay, Nathan and Michael Jackson; step-grandchildren; Jami, Jessica, Jasper, Terah and Morgan Jackson; brothers-in-law, Vincent (Caren) Vigil; Kim (Missy) Vigil; sister-in-law, Janis Vigil; and numerous nieces and nephews.
