Ilene June (Brenard) Callahan June 22, 1932 - April 16, 2013 Born in Fernbridge, CA to Smith and Jessie Bernard on June 22, 1932, raised on Rohnerville Racheria, she attended Fortuna High School and was instrumental in getting the reservation roads paved and electricity on the reservation before leaving the reservation and moving to Sacramento where she raised her family. She returned to school and completed Heald Business College in 1982. She worked for CIMC in Sacramento and was considered a dedicated and valuable employee where she received several certficates and awards. She was named oustanding employee of the year twice for her service througout her 12 years of employment with CIMC. She returned to Humboldt County in the early beginning of the new Bear River Rancheria. She gave her all to make the tribe what it is today. She was dedicated in her services as a tribal member. She served on many committees, election housing, CBDO and enrollment. She also sat on the casino board of directors and worked closely with the tribal gaming agency. In 2008 Ilene was elected to the Bear River Tribal Council where she served out a four year term. She retired in March of 2012 at the age of 79. Even after retiring, she continued her dedicated service with Bear River, serving on the enrollment committee with her last meeting on April 11, 2013. On April 16, 2013 Ilene passed away at 6:10pm peacefully at her home in Arcata with family at her side. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her. Preceding her in death was her husband Lauvell (Bud) Calhoun, her parents, her sisters and brothers, nephews Leonard and Kenneth Bowman. Ilene is survived by her sons Robert A. Ellis III and his wife Pat of Fortuna, William Ellis Sr. of Sacramento, Fred Miller of Loleta, Bert Miller of Fortuna, her daughters Barbara Salazar of Arcata, Susan Martinez Wagner of Eureka, and Laurel Miller of Arcata. She leaves behind 17 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 13 great great granchildren. She was a favorite aunt to Barry Brenard and Myrna Ray. She also leaves behind numerous neices and nephews. Special thanks to Pat Ellis for her care and services during her time of passing. Arrangements are under the care of Sanders Funeral Home Chapel of the Ferns Mortuary in Eureka. Visitation to be held Monday, April 22, 2013 at Chapel of the Ferns at 1835 E St. between the hours of 4 and 7. Memorial dinner will be held at a later time at Bear River Community Center.
