In Loving Memory of Joe Alan Downs of Sept. 3rd, 1961, to April 21, 2013, when he left this world to be with his Heavenly Father after a valiant 8½year battle with colon cancer. Joe never gave up the battle, believing with all his heart that he would be healed. Joe was born in Andrews, Texas, to Joe N. and Betty J. Downs. They moved from Texas to Trona, California for a few years, then settled in Samoa, California. Joe attended Peninsula Elementary School, graduating in 1976, then went on to Arcata High School. Joe had many fond memories of growing up in Samoa. Joe's hobbies included riding motorcycles on the Samoa dunes with his friends, and he especially enjoyed the time he was able to spend riding and hanging out with his uncle Layman Gattis. He also enjoyed running track, playing basketball and baseball, winning many tournaments and awards. Fishing, however, was his favorite. He loved to fish for salmon, bottom fish, sharks and rays, basically anything BIG! Our family has many fond memories of fishing with Joe (Dad). He really enjoyed the time he spent watching professional football on television with his son Shayne, the Dallas Cowboys being their favorite team. He also enjoyed watching old westerns such as "Gunsmoke" and detective shows. Joe grew to know and love the Lord, and spent a lot of time with his brother Mike reading and studying the Bible. Joe had many different jobs, working as a security guard, a dog groomer with B&B grooming, a utility worker at United Equipment Rentals, and a laborer at Sierra Pacific in Manila, Blue Lake Forest Products and Pacific Lumber Company in Scotia. Joe was naturally talented at fixing anything with small motors to vehicles. On January 23rd, Joe was blessed to be present at the birth of his latest grand-daughter, Addilyn Fay, born to Makhila and Shayne Downs. Joe loved and adored his children and grandchildren, and was proud to be present at each of their births. He loved them so much and was very proud of each and every one of them. One thing Joe was determined and excited to do was to walk his beautiful daughter down the aisle to be married, and on March 24th, 2013, he did just that when he gave his daughter to be married to Mr. James Lane. It was a joyous and beautiful celebration which he was proud to be a part of. Joe leaves behind his loving wife of 33 years, Dorothy Downs, his daughter Sheryl Marie Downs (Lane), her husband James Lane and their daughters Shalee Jean and Jaden Nicole, his son Shayne Allen Downs, wife Makhila Downs (Brooks) and their daughter Addilyn Fay. Joe loved his children and grandchildren with all his heart. Joe also leaves behind his mother and father, Joe and Betty Downs of Samoa, his brothers Mike and Billy Downs, and numerous other loving family members and friends. We would like to thank all of the Doctors and Nurses that treated Joe during his illness: Eureka Oncology & Lab, Fortuna Family Practice, and U.C.S.F. There are too many to list, but we thank everyone who participated in Joe's care. No matter how bad Joe felt, he still managed to make us all laugh, and maintained a great sense of humor. We would also like to thank the Cancer society and Hospice of Humboldt for their loving kindness. There will be a memorial service in honor of Joe on Sunday, May 19th, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Scotia ball park in Scotia, Ca. This will be a potluck style event so please if possible bring a hot dish, salad, or dessert. Hot dogs and drinks will be provided. If you are unable to bring a dish, please know you are welcome anyway and share a story or good memory about Joe. This will be a NON alcoholic function.
