John Harvey Walter

John Harvey Walter passed away Nov. 29, 2012 at Redding, CA. He was born March 6, 1926 at Eugene, OR. He was preceded in death by his father Festus Conklin Walter and mother Helen (Bower) Carpenter. John was first married to Helen Jean Voigt and had one son Robert Alan Walter. Helen and Robert both survive and live in Turlock, CA. John's second marriage was to Maurine (Johnson) Smith, who predeceased in 2007. John is survived by half brothers Roy McCrigler of Fortuna, CA; and Festus Jimmy Walter of Coquille, OR; and a sister Rosemary (Walter) Chapman of Springfield, OR. John is survived by a stepson Stanford Smith of Redding, CA. John's predeceased family includes a sister Beatrice Mabel (Walter) Heiken; brother Charles Henry Walter; half sister Ruth Elizabeth (Walter) Snodgrass; half brother David Clark Walter; and step daughter Mary Alice (Smith) Cruz. Like many others of his generation, John experienced hardships of the "great depression." John served in the Merchant Marine as a teenager in World War II. John's hobbies were restoring old cars and gardening. John had several occupations in his working years; lumbering related, gas station owner, tractor sales, and Bank of America Field Representative. John saw much of the US and the world, but spent most of his life living and working in Humboldt County. John was buried Dec. 6, 2012 at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery at Igo, California.
