Katharina "Kathy" Leonardi

Katharina "Kathy" Leonardi Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Kathy Leonardi passed over on January 24, 2013. Born December 3, 1930, she just celebrated her 82nd birthday. Kathy arrived in Ferndale together with her parents and grandmother in December 1949 to join her aunt and uncle, Helen M. and Roy D. Watson and her cousins Calvin and Zita Watson.While in Ferndale, the first people outside of the family she met were Agnes Guglielmina and Betty Fuller both came calling at the Watson home to welcome the newcomers by bringing gifts of baked goods.It felt like home to her. Having received her formal business education in Europe, she attended Eureka Business College to brush up on local business practices.She soon started to work for Petersen Chevrolet in Ferndale as a bookkeeper until 1954 when she married her husband, Angelo Leonardi, and moved to the Leonardi family ranch house on Waddington Road where they lived happily for 35 years. Kathy's passions in life were her family and her garden and all things related to them.She felt very blessed that all her grandchildren grew up in Ferndale.She would be at all of their games, "show day" at the fairs, FFA and 4-H functions, school events, and dance or music recitals. When you stopped by her house, chances are you would find her in the garden.She enjoyed every aspect of gardening from growing the simplest plant to landscape design.Kathy was a dedicated exhibitor at the Humboldt County Fair for years and her floral displays were rewarded with many top awards and trophiesespecially large silver trays for sweepstakes awards.For many years at the fair she grew an outdoor garden, created elaborate lath house displays, designed arrangements, and entered cut flowers and specimens in Belotti hall. When she retired as an exhibitor, she continued her involvement as a certified judge for the floral department. Kathy was a member of the Ferndale Garden Club, a life member of California Garden Clubs, Inc., the American Daffodil Society, American Rose Society, Humboldt Rose Society, Humboldt Botanical Gardens Foundation, Ferndale Museum, Humboldt Swiss Club, and Assumption Church. An avid flower arranger, she gave many programs and workshops, generously sharing her knowledge of the subject.She was rewarded for her dedication to gardening by being named "Gardener of the Year" by the Humboldt District of California Garden Clubs in 1983 and "Flower Arranger of the Year" by the California Garden Club in 1985.The NCNH district of the American Rose Society named her "Outstanding Rose Arrangement Judge" in 2000; she received a "Bronze Medal" for outstanding service to the society in 2003, and she received the American Rose Society designation of "Master Rosarian" in 2007. Kathy is survived by her son Dennis (Kathleen) Leonardi of Ferndale; daughters Linda (Larry) Biondini of Fortuna and Mary Ann (Dave) Renner of Ferndale; grandchildren Carolyn Cobb (Fiance' Tommy Dolcini) of Petaluma; Shannon (Andrew) Tauzer of Korbel; Elizabeth Leonardi of Washington DC; Margaret Leonardi of Fresno, Zach Leonardi of Ferndale; Matthew Renner (Fiancee' Krista Birmingham) of Blue Lake; Alayna Renner of Ferndale; great-grandchildren James and Wyatt Tauzer; cousins Albert and Gloria Webel of Florida, Dr. Ewald Judt of Vienna, Austria; Anna Neufellner of Vienna, Austria; Pastor Calvin Peter of Aurora, Colorado; Kurt Peter of Aurora, Colorado; Alfred Peter of Aurora, Colorado; and Hans Peter of Gresham, Oregon. Kathy was preceded in death by her husband, Angelo Leonardi, in 1989, her father August Judt in 1960, her mother Katharina Judt in 2001, her beloved grandmother Teresia Peter in 1978, her aunt Helen (Roy) Watson, and her uncle John (Margaret) Peter. Serving as pallbearers will be Larry Biondini, Tommy Dolcini, Zach Leonardi, Dave Renner, Matthew Renner, and Andrew Tauzer. Visitation hours will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Assumption Catholic Church in Ferndale. A Rosary will be held at the Assumption Catholic Church, 546 Berding Street, in Ferndale on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013, 10:00 am at the Assumption Catholic Church followed by a burial service at St. Mary's Cemetery in Ferndale.Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of her life at the Town Hall in Ferndale immediately following the funeral service on Saturday.
