LaVerne Ora Costa

Our Mother LaVerne Ora Costa passed away peacefully on Friday, December 27, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Mom was born on March 18, 1930 to George and Viola Taylor and was 83 years of age at the time of her death. Mom married our father Eugene Costa and began her first job in 1948 at the old barrell factory. Later she moved on to work at Georgia Pacific plywood mill for 18 years while also raising six children as a single mother. Mom worked extremely hard every day. After the mill closed, she held a couple of different jobs until she got her first job at HSU in the custodial department. She worked there for 5 years then got on with food services there and worked 18 years until her stroke in 1998. During her time there she met many students and developed life long friendship with many of them. She had a wonderful way of easily making friends and spent evenings at home cooking for students, whom she invited into her home for dinner. One evening, she had the HSU band over and they all ate and celebrated the evening together. Mom and her girlfriends also did catering on the side together. She could cook the best meals and desserts. She made the best pies ever! Throughout Mom's life, her greatest loves were her family and friends. She loved camping and traveling, anywhere hot, Hawaii, Mexico and Florida. She loved her yard and planting flowers, and especially her beautiful roses. She loved entertaining, parties, dancing and margueritas! She enjoyed swimming at the Arcata Pool and walks with her friends. She filled her days. Many people sat around the kitchen table and enjoyed card games with Mom and her popular mudslides. Mom was preceded in death by her parents George and Viola Taylor, her younger sister Ida Janette, and sister in law Bernice Taylor. She is survived by her six children Merlin Costa and his wife Diane, Greg Costa and wife Beth, Shawn Costa, Balenda Thrash and husband Randy, Ranae Watson and husband Brett, and Troy Costa. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Zach Costa, Jennifer Costa-Stines, Dustin, Ryan, and Aaron Costa, Logan Jensen, Melody Sanford and Tanner Thrash, Skyler and Callie Palmer, also Kia Kelsey and Elijah Costa, her brothers Delbert, Gary and John Taylor, and her sister Deborah Jimenez. Mom is also survived by 5 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her dear friend Margaret "Peggy" Jenkins, and her lifelong childhood friend Marlise Fraser. Services will be held on Saturday, January 11 at noon. The service will be held at Sanders Funeral Home 1835 E St. in Eureka.
