Louise Merrell March 27, 1942 -February 13, 2013 Louise Merrell, 70, Fortuna, CA formerly of Kokomo, IN, passed away at her daughter's residence on February 13, 2012. She was born, Minnie Louise Merrell to James L. and Irene (DeVries) Merrell in Kokomo, IN on March 27, 1942. She graduated from Kokomo High School in 1960 with a scholarship to John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis, IN. She was active in the high school, designing and decorating the stages and backdrops for the KHS Dramatic Club and Thespian Club. Always busy with art, she also decorated for the various Fall, Winter, and Spring Proms, plus the Mother and Daughter Receptions. In the fall, she also painted the various store windows for extra cash for the KHS Art Department. She also designed the brochures for most of the above events. After graduating from high school, she taught church school for the Seventh-day Adventist in Richmond, IN for one year. The next year, she started to work for Delco Electronics, a division of General Motors
while taking classes at John Herron Art Institute and Indiana University
Kokomo. Taking time out to get married, she produced the greatest love of her life, her only child, a beautiful daughter, Michelle Gifford. Being a member of the UAW 292, she enjoyed taking her daughter to the various functions that the union sponsored and using the ice skating rink and park as frequently as they could. In 1963, she joined Eastern Star in Young America and transferred her membership to the Kokomo Eastern Star, Chapter #89 in 1975. When she passed away, she was only six weeks from receiving her 50 Year Pin this year. In 1988, she received an Associates Degree in General Studies from IUK. Retiring in 1993, she moved to California where she was welcomed by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Michelle & Bill Mason. She never regretted moving and totally fell in loved with northern California and watching her two grandsons grow up. When she first arrived in California, she enjoyed painting, drawing, crocheting, and running a successful daycare with her daughter, also an artist, who enhanced some of her mother's artwork with creative computer graphics. After the daycare closed because of health issues, Louise enjoyed being a member of the Woman's Auxiliary of the VFW
and joining the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed life and was active with the SDA Church in Fortuna, CA. As her health began to fail, her family continued to be the most important thing in her life. She also had a great love of animals, and often told amusing and endearing stories about her favorite cats. Louise Merrell was preceded in death by both sets of her grandparents: Azariah & Minnie (Ratclifl) Merrell, Kokomo, IN. and James & Edna (Ayars) De Vries, Carson City, MI. Her Mother: Irene (DeVries) Merrell, Kokomo, IN. One sister: Gladys Merrell. One brother: Walter Monroe Merrell. One nephew: James (Jamie) Roe, Kokomo, IN. Louise is survived by her daughter: Michelle (Gifford) and husband, William Mason, Fortuna, CA. Sister: Janice (Merrell) and William Roe, Kokomo, IN. Sister: Carletta (Merrell) Woodward, Kokomo, IN. Brother: James and Laura Merrell, Bettendorf, Iowa. Two grandsons, Paul and Allen Mason, Fortuna, CA. Niece: Elizabeth (Merrell) and Derrick Achacoso, IL. Nephew: Richard Merrell, PA. Nephew: Kyle Pryzdia, Bettendorf, Iowa. Niece: Chelsea Woodward and friend, Tracey Sharpe, Kokomo, IN. Nephew: Westley and Patricia Woodward, Kokomo, IN. Niece: Anna (Roe) and Scott Howard, Indianapolis, IN. Niece: Dolores (Roe) Dickison, Sarasota, FL. Nephew: William and Sohyang Kim Roe, Miami, FL. Nephew: John Roe, Kokomo, IN. Niece: Letitia (Roe) and John Farmer, Syracuse, Utah. Nephew: Rusty and Lisa Roe, Meridian, Idaho. And 14 great nieces and nephews. Louise Merrell was cremated in Fortuna, CA.
