Robert Joe (Bob) Rains

ROBERT (BOB) JOE RAINS Robert Joe Rains was born on January 13, 1930 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, to Joe and Ella Mae Rains, in the middle of a snowstorm. He passed away on September 26, 2013, in Eureka, CA, with his family at his side. Bob is survived by his wife of 33 years, Yvonne Rains, sons Darrell Rains (Barbara), Scott Rains (Betsy), Bryon Hall (Lisa), grandchildren Karissa White (Rob), Aubrey Spencer (Jarod), Alexis Warren (Adam), Taylor, Paxton and Brady Rains, Marissa and Marlee Hall and great grandchildren. He is also survived by cousin Roy Rains (Betty) and family, niece Debbie Dunn (Jim) and family, and US Navy buddy Don Mock (Rosemary) and family. Bob enlisted in the US Navy right out of high school. His three year enlistment was extended a year by President Harry Truman when the Korean War started. While he was in Korea, he was proud to have served with the United States Marine Corps as a medical corpsman. He got out of the service in 1952. He worked for ATT converting phone lines to rotary phone service. He worked for American Airlines repairing rotary blades on airplanes. While he was out of the service he played semipro baseball. He had grown up playing baseball as a pitcher. He returned to the Navy in 1958. Bob was a Retired Veteran having served 20 years in the US Navy, and was a Korean War Veteran. He was stationed in San Diego, Yokosuka, Japan on the USS Okanogan, USNH Great Lakes, IL, US NMS Kingsville, TX, USNH Guam and NNMC Bethesda, Maryland. He was a Hospital Medical Corpsman, and retired in 1974 as a Chief Petty Officer. He moved to Eureka, CA in 1974 to take a position as Chief Engineer at St. Joseph Hospital. While at St. Joseph, he met his wife Yvonne and after a two and a half month whirlwind romance, married her on April 25, 1980. He was an avid golfer and Washington Redskins fan. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing poker and giving his grandchildren golf cart rides at his home in Willow Creek, CA. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Ella Mae Rains, his sister Mae Jene Rains, nephews Randy and Tommy Currier, and his in-laws Ralph and Bernice Bumpus. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 2, at Sanders Funeral Home in Eureka, CA from 12:00 noon to 8:00 pm. Graveside services, with military honors, will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2013, at Ocean View Cemetery, Eureka, CA at 11:00 am, in the Veteran's section. A reception will follow at 12 noon at the Eureka Elks Lodge on Herrick Ave. Donations can be made to Hospice of Humboldt or .
