Robert W. Gardner, M.D. 1933-2013 The son of Robert and Laura Gardner, Bob was a third generation Eurekan. He grew up in Willow Creek and Eureka. Following graduation from Eureka High School, he received a B.A. degree from U.C. Berkeley, an M.D. from McGill University and psychiatric training at the University of Iowa
. He was a Naval Aviator during the Korean War
, flying a P2V Neptune patrol bomber in the Aleutians and along the Siberian coast. During those Navy years, he and Nancy Budlong were married in Eureka in 1956 and first resided in Oak Harbor, WA then Berkeley, CA; Montreal, PQ; Campbell, CA and Iowa City, IA. They returned to Eureka in 1967 where Bob practiced psychiatric medicine until 2000. Bob was a member of the American Psychiatric Association, California Psychiatric Association, Northern California Psychiatric Association, California Medical Association, Humboldt-Del Norte Medical Society and staffs of the local hospitals. He was a founding member of the Physicians Well-Being Committee and belonged to the North Coast Vintage Aviation Society. Inspiration and renewal were found in the great outdoors. His interests ranged from climbing the walls of Yosemite to tennis, golf, running (three marathons), backpacking, sailboat racing and cruising, flying the family Cessna 210, a family viticulture project (the first commercial winegrape vineyard in Humboldt County at Willow Creek), gardening, reading and classical music. Bob was predeceased by his parents of Eureka and aunt Eleanor Gardner of Berkeley. Survivors include his wife Nancy of Eureka; daughter Susan Townsend (Steve) of Eureka; grandchildren and great-grandchildren Michelle Dedmore (Duane) and Martin of Fairhaven, Jon Omey (Lisa) and Ellie and Vincent of Eureka, and Ben Omey of Eureka; daughter Katie Hoepfner (Pete) and granddaughters Sarah and Haley of Cordova, AK; son Michael Gardner (Amy) and grandson Ethan of Roseville, CA; son Jeffrey Gardner (Liz) and grandchildren Camryn and Spencer of Spokane, WA. Above all, Bob wanted it to be said that his life was immeasurably enriched by his wife and family, and that any contribution in life he may have made was due to their love and support. He will soar forever in our hearts. The family wishes to thank physicians Welton , Christensen, Allen and Infusion Service staff, Fratkin, Abels, Tessler, Osborn, Ploss, Albertini, Dorman, and Nelson with the special Hospice staff of Kelley, Pamela, Nick, Arlene and Mac.
