Roy Iskra Obituary

Roy Joseph Iskra Roy Joseph Iskra was born in Fieldbrook, CA to Matthew and Josephine Iskra on February 20, 1922. He died in Eureka on November 17, 2013 at age 91. Roy attended Arcata High School and then worked for the Hammond Lumber Company. In October of 1942 he enlisted in the US Navy. In the navy, he served as ship's cook in the Pacific theater aboard the USS Greenlet (a submarine training and salvage ship) and, for a shorter time, aboard the USS Sperry (a submarine tender). Aboard the Greenlet, he was a member of the Occupation Force in Yokosuka and was present in Tokyo Bay during the Japanese surrender. Roy was honorably discharged from the navy in October of 1945. Back in Arcata, Roy worked as a milkman for the Cottage Grove Dairy. Next, he apprenticed as a meat cutter at Sequoia Grocery on the plaza, going on to run the meat department there for nine years. He then worked for Langer and Kretner meat wholesalers before opening his own butcher shop, Roy's Quality Meats. He retired after 27 years at that shop on I street, now the Arcata Los Bagels. Look for his picture by the door. Roy was a life member of the American Legion and a life member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Mad River post. He was also a long-time member of the SF Giants Booster Club and travelled with the group to many Giants games across the United States. Roy was preceded in death by his brothers, Milton and Gerald "Jerry" Iskra, and his wife, Joyce Iskra. He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Olds (husband DuWayne) of Arcata; granddaughter, Julie Quinn (husband Chris) of Portland, OR; stepson, Dennis Mackey (wife Judy) of Rescue, CA; sister-in-law Jean Iskra of Cathedral City, CA; as well as several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Irvine and his staff (Deb and Linda) for their years of compassionate care, the wonderful staff members at Sequoia Springs Assisted Living and Pacific Rehabilitation and Wellness Center, and Dr. Han for her excellent care this past year. At Roy's request, no services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to Honor Flight Northern California, PO Box 707, Trinidad, CA 95570 (please specify Humboldt County on the memo line) or to a charity of your choice. Carolyn ,

I will always remember Roy as the reputable meat cutter in Arcata .

I still have the cherished memory of him and Uncle Jerry on videotape at my parent's 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration .

I am thankful that Roy got to see the Giants win the World Series in 2010 and 2012 . I know that he had to have had great patience as the Giants have long been a team that can try the patience of any fan .

I often stopped in to see Roy while at Pacific during my outreach. I missed him very much when he left Sequoia. Now he can watch the games from high above the blimp
