Thomas Jefferson Wood Jr.

Thomas Jefferson Wood, Jr. passed away unexpectedly on February 19, 2013 in Arcata, CA. He was 65 years old. Tom was born May 10, 1947 in Chico, California. His family later moved to Humboldt County where he grew up and attended school, graduating from McKinleyville HS in 1966. Tom was a proud veteran of the US Marine Corps. In 1970 he married Beverly Lockett and they began a wonderful journey together that lasted 42 years. In 1976 their son Jacob was born. Tom was incredibly proud of his family and was a loving, caring and generous person. He greatly enjoyed family activities, in particular coaching Jacob's youth sports and drag racing at the Samoa Drag Strip. He also liked woodworking and making outdoor furniture. He was a man of many talents and untapped skills. Tom held a variety of jobs before he began a 44-year career at Simpson Timber Korbel. He worked many years as a graderre/ trimmerman in the planer department. He took an early retirement in 2009 following a serious illness. Tom was a real people person. He had a great sense of humor and quick wit. He loved to chat with friends and strangers alike, and he could converse easily on numerous topics. He often said he knew a little bit about a lot of different things and had a wealth of trivial knowledge. He was an avid cook, and he enjoyed cooking for family and friends, especially the holiday meals. He frequently created his own recipes but also spent many hours searching the internet for new recipes to try. Tom struggled with many serious health issues over the years but never stopped fighting. Though our hearts are broken as he is gone much too soon, we take comfort he is at peace with our Heavenly Father. Tom was predeceased by his father Tom Sr., his parents Al and Laura Cantwell, his brothers Joe and Mike, his in-laws Charles and Elsie Lockett, and many other relatives. He will be greatly missed by his wife Beverly, his son Jacob and family, his brother Rick and family, his sister Karen and family, as well as numerous sisters and brothers-in-law, cousins, nephews and nieces. He also leaves behind special friends Lynne Schiewe, Tom Swift, Gary Robertson, and Leila Guerrero among many others. There will be no formal service per Tom's request. A private family gathering will take place at a later date. Please sign the guest book at www.Times-Standard.com, click on obits.
