Virginia May Fosdick

Virginia May Fosdick May 19, 1927 - September 28, 2013 Mom was born on May 19, 1927 at her grandparent's home in Kentucky and passed away at home in Eureka with her daughter by her side. Mom was the third of four children. When she was seven years old, her mother died and for the next two years she bounced between relatives and an orphanage before moving to her Aunt Pearl's farm. As a young girl, she collected eggs for her aunt to sell and helped Uncle Charles build cardboard walls in their home. As she got older, she worked part time at the grocery and laundromat in town. At age 16 she moved into town to her cousin's house, which was across the street from the Fosdick family. She met and married our dad while he was home on leave in 1944. She moved to California the next year to join Homer in Humboldt County where he was stationed. Mom always worked, whether at a store or taking in laundry and ironing or taking care of children. At age 27, she started working for the U.S. Postal Service as a window clerk; first at the H Street Federal Building and later at the Clark Street office. Although she retired from there in 1986, for years people would come up to her remembering her from the post office. She spent her retirement enjoying her grandchildren, gardening in her yard, going to farmer's markets and taking care of her many pets, most of which found their way to her. She lived on the same block for over 60 years and was known for feeding all the neighborhood cats. She was a very king and compassionate person and will be greatly missed. Mom was preceded in death by her husband Homer and by all of her siblings. She is survived by her daughter Janet (Alan) Miller; sons Robert, Homer (Sherri) and Donald Fosdick. She also leaves behind her granddaughters Kimberly (Daniel) Baeza, Roberta (Joey) Fosdick and Abigail (Max) Fosdick; great-grandchildren Justin, Bree and Danica Baeza, Alexis, Luca and Emily Green and close friend Ginger Tremblay. Graveside services for family and close friends will be at Ocean View Cemetery on Friday, October 11, 2013 at 2 p.m. Arrangements are under the care of Sanders Funeral Home, Eureka. Contributions may be made in her name to Hospice of Humboldt or the Humboldt Co. Animal Shelter. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com
