ABBIE MALOCH SMITH She went home to be with her Lord on April 11, 2017, 11 days after her husband Paul. Abbie, the fifth of seven children, was born in Meadow, TX on July 23rd, 1923 to Chester Talbot Maloch and Annie Beaver Maloch. A bright student, Abbie finished high school a year early and missed being the valedictorian by a very slim margin. Abbie went on to study at Baylor University. She was working in a dining hall at Baylor where after much pursuit she granted Paul Smith a single date. The two became inseparable. Abbie and Paul married in January 1944. Abbie and Paul put their education on hold due to the war. Abbie taught elementary school while Paul was serving in the Marines. After the war they returned to Baylor to finish their degrees and caring for their first daughter, Judith. Abbie and Paul graduated in 1949 and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where Abbie taught school and Paul continued his education. Jann was born during this time. In 1965, the Smith family moved to Humboldt County, where Abbie taught first grade in Eureka until she retired in 1978. Abbie was an accomplished musician and enjoyed traveling. Abbie was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, H. Paul Smith. She is survived by her daughters Judith Penn and Jann Franklin; four grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at McKinleyville Baptist Church, Saturday April 15, 2017 at 11 am. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com

Abbie was a ray of sunshine. I well remember how much my father, Jesse Gatlin, admired her piano playing and singing at Pine Hill Baptist Church. She sang for my father's funeral service and lifted our hearts when they were very heavy.
