Agnes Wagner Obituary

Agnes Mary Wagner is now in the presence and loving arms of the one and only living God, having passed on October 14, 2010, just two months from her 99th birthday. She was born December 17, 1911, in Portland, Oregon. Without many advantages, she has lived productively, persevered, and demonstrated a tremendous amount of resiliency. From her disadvantaged beginnings, she built a life worthy of imitation, and she gave that life to her children as an inheritance. From a very poor childhood and a lonesome and insecure young adult life, Agnes survived. On November 24, 1937, she married William Paul Wagner and experienced his love and security for the next 62 years, until his death on February 29, 2000. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother. Her children and grandchildren loved and respected her, as did many friends and relatives. Her grandchildren described her as their "magical Grammy" because of the many stories she would tell, the games she would play with them, the cookies she baked especially for them, and the many memories she gave them. Agnes had a servant's heart and was a 'penny-pincher" concerning herself but was extremely generous with her family and friends. Her greatest gift was writing letters. She would write 200 to 300 letters a year giving encouragement to her family and friends. Paul and Agnes lived in Manteca, CA, until 1950 when Paul transferred with PG&E to Humboldt County. Agnes was the first president of the Manteca Schools PTA. From 1955 to 1960 she worked in the Arcata High School Cafeteria. She was active in the Arcata Church of Christ and the Rio Dell Church of Christ until her health kept her from attending. She was still serving as a Sunday School teacher while she was in her 70s, and the children loved her. Agnes is survived by her three children and their spouses: Stanley and Georgia McDaniel of Knoxville, TN; Lois and Matt Dillon of Eugene, OR; William and Karen Wagner of Eureka. She is survived by her grandchildren: Stanley and Diane McDaniel of Charlotte, NC; Kimberly McDaniel of Knoxville, TN; Jana Geary and Sam Wells of London, UK; Paula and Mitchell Wang of Salem, OR; Dianne and Bobby Raack of Eugene, OR; John and Kathy Dillon of Glide, OR; Jeanine and Michael Fling of Eugene, OR; and William Paul Wagner of Longmont, CO. She also had 14 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Her family would like to thank the Hospice Staff, especially Marian and Tracy, and the Visiting Angels, Sheila and Wendy. They all gave her loving, compassionate, and friendly care the past seven months and were extremely helpful to the family. At her request no services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made in Agnes' memory to Hospice of Humboldt, 2010 Myrtle Avenue, Eureka, CA 95501, or to a favorite charity. You were a great mother-in-law to me for 58 years, and you were dearly loved by our children, Stan Jr and Kim. Our granddaughter, Heather, also had the honor of loving you as a grandmother for 28 years. Your great, great granddaughter, Korenna, also was fortunate to spend time with you. The other two great, greats, James and Jace will know you through the memories we all give them by telling them wonderful stories about you.
See you soon in a better place.
